چکیده

Statistical forecasts of Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane activity have been issued since 1984 by the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University (CSU) headed by William Gray. Since these initial forecasts were developed, considerable improvements in data and statistical techniques have led to improved amounts of skill in both hindcasting and forecasting of seasonal Atlantic basin hurricane activity by CSU as well as other forecast groups including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Tropical Storm Risk. Statistical seasonal forecasts derive their skill from atmospheric and oceanic parameters that span the globe. Recent developments in statistical prediction include the development of shorter-period forecasts for the individual months of August, September and October and the issuing of landfall predictions or probabilities. Individual forecast groups generally utilize large-scale atmospheric wind and circulation patterns to issue their landfall forecasts. In addition, landfall probabilities down to the county level for all coastal counties from Brownsville, Texas to Eastport, Maine have recently been made available online. Several forecasting groups are now issuing seasonal forecasts for the Atlantic basin, and it is to be expected that the skill of these forecasts will continue to improve with additional access to improved data and modelling capabilities.

Revised Prediction of Seasonal Atlantic Basin Tropical Cyclone Activity from 1 August

Predictions of the remainder of the season’s Atlantic basin tropical cyclone activity from 1 August have been issued by Gray and his colleagues at the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University since 1984. The original 1 August prediction scheme utilized several predictors, including measures of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), West African rainfall, El Niño–So...

A simplified Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane prediction scheme from 1 August

[1] The Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University has issued seasonal forecasts for Atlantic basin hurricane activity in early August since 1984. This paper proposes a simplified scheme, using a combination of two surface predictors selected from the newly‐developed Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) as well as a dynamical forecast for El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) ...

Prediction of Seasonal Atlantic Basin Accumulated Cyclone Energy from 1 July

The Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University currently issues seasonal forecasts for Atlantic basin hurricane activity in early April, June, and August. This paper examines the potential for issuing an additional seasonal forecast on 1 July, using a two-predictor forecast model. The two predictors are selected from the ECMWF Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim) and explain over 60...

Refinements to Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane prediction from 1 December

[1] Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane predictions have been issued by the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University since 1984, with early December forecasts being issued every year since early December 1991. These forecasts have yet to show real-time forecast skill, despite several statistical models that have shown considerable hindcast skill. In an effort to improve both hind...

Sub-seasonal tropical cyclone genesis prediction and MJO in the S2S dataset

Subseasonal probabilistic prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis is investigated here using models from the seasonal to subseasonal (S2S) dataset. Forecasts are produced for basin-wide TC occurrence at weekly temporal resolution. Forecast skill is measured using the Brier skill score relative to two no-skill climatological forecasts: an annual mean climatology that is constant through the ...
